Britain’s
Jack Draper has stated that his win over Italy’s
Lorenzo Musetti at the
Madrid Open was ‘special’ for one particular
reason. The 23-year-old, who is regarded as one of the most talented players
currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, is going through an
impressive season.
On Friday, Draper cemented his place in the final of the ongoing ATP 1000 event in the Spanish capital after beating Musetti in the semifinal in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6. It will be his second ATP final this season after winning the Indian Wells title, where he defeated Denmark’s Holger
Rune in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Draper talked to the media after the match and stated that his win was a ‘special’ one because his mother was watching in the stands. The 2024 US Open semifinal stated that in the recent past, when his mother turned up, he produced ‘shocker’ performances, and therefore, the win on Friday meant a
lot for him.
“[It’s] amazing, amazing,” said Draper. “The last few
matches she’s come to watch me play, I mean the last one was in Monte-Carlo and
I had a shocker! I think I haven’t won a match in front of her for a while. So
to play in front of her on this stage, she’s made so many sacrifices and been
such an amazing support and mum to me over the years. For her to be here, it’s
very special for me. I think I was just trying to stay present. I had chances,
he had one little chance, and I think the key was trying. I was looking at my
coach because sometimes in these big moments, I was going a little bit passive
and at this level against that kind of calibre of opponent, he’s not going to
let you off the hook.”
