Carlos Alcaraz will soon grow out of the persistent injury and fitness woes that have plagued him at times in recent months believes
Boris Becker.
Alcaraz's form slightly dipped after winning Wimbledon as he pursued the World Number One spot and kept playing while the likes of Novak Djokovic were picking and choosing. As a result, he burned himself out with 77 matches over the course of the season.
He missed several tournaments due to injury at the start of the year even with the Australian Open in particular missing the Spaniard. He also missed Monte-Carlo, Basel and Acapulco throughout the year due to various small niggles and Becker says that it is part and parcel of the game for young players and despite his status as a top name, he will soon grow out of it.
“When motivation weakens, the body also suffers. If you skip one or two training sessions. That’s what happened to me. It’s happened to every successful 20-year-old," he said on Eurosport podcast Das Gelbe vom Ball.
Alcaraz won't play any Australian Open warm-ups either, but Becker who will coach Holger Rune over the next season alongside Severin Luthi is confident that he will be fit enough for Melbourne.
“I am convinced, with Carlos Ferrero at his side, that Carlos is going into the winter break highly motivated and is looking forward to Melbourne and the new season,” Becker continued.
He added: “We’ll have to see what happens. I saw him live in Turin [at the ATP Finals], also in training. He was physically fit.”
