Former US Open Champion
Juan Martin del Potro announced his likely retirement
from tennis on Saturday during an emotional press conference to mark
his return to the game.
Andy Murray is well aware of what Del Potro went through having suffered from career-ending injuries himself but unlike Murray, Del Potro doesn't seem to have a way of continuing to play tennis. Murray was asked about the press conference Del Potro held in Buenos Aires and he said:
“I haven’t seen it, I heard about it and it’s obviously very sad because he’s had many issues throughout his career – you hope that things are going to get better. A lot of tough times and everything that you go through and it’s not on camera, it must have been unbelievably difficult for him, I don’t really know what to say I just know having been in that position myself, you feel like you’re sort of suffering a lot of time alone or maybe the people around you know exactly what’s going on."
Del Potro will face fellow Argentine and good friend Federico Delbonis in the 1st round and it's something Del Potro said he is glad about. Facing a good friend is the way he would like to end it. Murray further added:
“That’s maybe the first time he’s sort of spoken publicly for quite a while, I’m sure he probably feels better now for it because well I’m sure the amount of messages or sort of love and support that he would have got from his fans all around the world.”
