Jack Draper was the big winner at Indian Wells after a flawless journey that led him to his first Masters 1000 title. The No. 1 Brit dominated Holger Rune with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 scoreline and achieved his career-highest ranking at World No. 6.
The 23-year-old has reignited hope for British tennis fans, who had recently witnessed the end of Andy Murray’s best years as the leader of British tennis, leaving a challenging void. Although Murray retired in mid-2024, he had not been dazzling for years, as he hadn’t advanced past the third round in a Masters 1000 or Grand Slam since 2017.
The former world No. 1 won a total of 14 Masters titles and reached 7 finals. However, Draper isn’t the only Brit to have won a Masters 1000 title, as Greg Rusedski, Tim Henman, and Cameron Norrie have also claimed one each in the past.
Draper now marks his place in British tennis history by reaching his career-highest ranking as World No. 7, only behind Murray (No. 1), Henman (No. 4), and Rusedski (No. 4).
With Draper as the latest Masters 1000 champion, the hopes placed on him in recent years are starting to become a reality, and he will be a player to watch in the battle for Grand Slam titles if he can maintain his physical health.
The 23-year-old has been plagued by injuries several times before, but he was flawless at Indian Wells and seems to have found a level of form that allows him to compete in good physical condition.
Draper also became the 4th player born in the 2000s to win a Masters 1000 title, following Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune—his opponent in the Indian Wells final.
