World number five
Jack Draper has withdrawn from the
US Open due to discomfort in his arm. The world number five was due to face off against Zizou Bergs in his second round match tomorrow.
After a disappointing Wimbledon campaign where he lost in the second round to Marin Cilic, he took an extended break from the game to recover and let his injury heal before an important period at the end of the season.
He was unable to compete in the DC Open, Canadian Open, and the Cincinnati Open before travelling to New York to take part in the revamped
US Open mixed doubles event. He had partnered up with American number two Jessica Pegula, and they managed to reach the semi-finals, losing out to eventual runners-up Casper Ruud and Iga Swiatek.
There was doubts from Draper ig he would even turn up in New York, having explained that he did not serve for a month of hit a groundstroke for two weeks after Wimbledon.
In his first round tie, he faced off against Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez, coming through it in a tight game. He won the first two sets before losing a tiebreak in the third. He managed to overpower his opponent in the fourth, winning the last four games to send him through to the next round, but it seems that the injury he has been nursing has again caught up with him, forcing him to retire from the event.
On X, he posted a statement which said: "Hi guys, I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US Open. I tried my very best to be here and give myself every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become to much and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support."
Draper had high ambitions to match or even better his performance last year, reaching the semi-finals before being swept aside by the world number one and US Open champion Jannik Sinner. He will lose a whole host of points from this, meaning he is at risk of falling a few places in the rankings ahead of the ATP Tour finals and the remaining tournaments of 2025.
It is yet to be seen when Draper will return, with the number one Brit's season frustratingly being halted after what seemed like so much potential.
