After not winning since her epic
US Open triumph back in 2021,
Emma Raducanu now has two wins in a row as she perhaps got the easier of the two ties she could've got against
Janice Tjen.
But while the Indonesian qualifier isn't of the calibre of Veronika Kudermetova who was set likely to play Raducanu, she had got matches under her belt and has been a superb ITF player this season. Also is unknown to Raducanu so perhaps was going to pose some problems at the
US Open.
But it was a destructive display from the Brit as she eased through in just one hour 6-2, 6-1. Next up for her is the winner of Elena Rybakina or young Czech star Tereza Valentova to get into the fourth round. If she manages to get through that the draw semi opens up as McCartney Kessler or Marketa Vondrousova or Jasmine Paolini/Iva Jovic would await her.
Back with a new coach at Flushing Meadows but very much thriving, Emma Raducanu could be tough to beat on hallowed ground playing the tennis of her life for the first time since her shock run.
Her serve in particular was formidable as she sent down eight aces and several more that were unreturnable. She saved all three break points. All of this was in the third game of the match and saved them all. She only conceded 13 points on serve all game. She also attacked the backhand of Tjen superbyl drawing 16 winners. Tjen impressed at the net winning all six points but Raducanu managed to stunt any sort of rise.
She broke immediately for a 3-0 lead in the opening set. The British No.1 was faultless after that breaking Tjen to wrap up the first set before easing into a 5-0 lead in the second. Tjen would only get one more game on the board before Raducanu served things out for an impressive victory.
"I'm very pleased with how I played today," Raducanu said in her on-court interview. "In the last few weeks I've really stepped up with what I'm doing on and off the court.
"Super dangerous opponent. She was playing extremely well, and I thought any ball that I put mid-court that was not necessarily good enough, she just put away easy. So I was really pleased with how I performed today."
"I'm really happy I have those people in my corner over there. I'm really grateful for them. I'm just looking forward to building day by day, doing my best - that's all I can do - and I'm putting a lot of trust in the work I'm doing behind the scenes."
