While tennis fans were being entertained by the action on the courts at Indian Wells, there was a different kind of action going on at a smaller event on the ATP Challenger Tour, which almost resulted in fisticuffs between two players.
Alexander Bublik was taking on Corentin Moutet at the Arizona Tennis Classic, after both men had been eliminated from the ATP Masters event at Indian Wells. Although fans were looking forward to some showmanship from the volatile duo, not many expected the match to almost come to blows.
With Bublik up 6-5 in the final set and serving for the match, Moutet indicated he was not ready to serve. This led to a contentious exchange between both players, with Bublik stating he "didn't give a sh*t" if Moutet was ready to receive his serve since returner are required to play at the server's pace.
Bublik eventually won the match, but things almost became physical between both men during the post-match handshake. It took the intervention of the umpire and supervisor to calm both competitors.
On the latest episode of his Nothing Major podcast, retired American pro Jack Sock went into detail regarding the incident. The former World No.8 stated Bublik had tried to goad Moutet into fighting him in the parking lot after the match.
"He offered it, Bublik said let's go to the parking lot! He said, 'Do you want to go... we can go to the parking lot right now,'" said Sock. "He goes, 'Do you wanna fight?' And Corentin Moutet, like, started laughing as if it was... but I think Bublik was like ready to take the gloves off and go."
Former American pro Steve Johnson, who cohosts the podcast, chimed in, stating he would have preferred if the two men had settled their differences without any intervention.
"Can we just let these guys go at it?" added Johnson. "This is ridiculous, looks worse than they're just talking to each other. Let them walk in the locker room, solve their problems and be done with it!"
