World number one
Jannik Sinner has attended the Abu Dhabi
Grand Prix. The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the best players currently
playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with the likes of Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner attended the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Formula One confirmed the development in a post on social media with the caption: “Hey Jannik! 👋 World No. 1 ranked
tennis star @janniksin joins us for the season finale in Abu Dhabi!.”
Sinner has recently concluded an outstanding season where he
won two out of four Grand Slams. He lifted the Australian Open after beating
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of
3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. He lifted the US Open after beating America’s Taylor
Fritz in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
Sinner ended the season with an ATP Finals title as he once
again defeated Fritz in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Later,
Sinner went on to become part of the Italy team that won the Davis Cup
title for the second time in two years. While doing that, the reigning world number one becomes only
the second player in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era to finish the
season without losing a match in straight sets. The only other to do that was
the former world number one Switzerland’s Roger Federer.
Despite all those achievements, Sinner’s year was marred because of a controversy after he tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol in two doping tests. Interestingly, the world number one managed to narrowly escape a ban after the International
Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepted the player’s counsel’s response where
they claimed that the availability of the banned substance in the player’s sample
was because of receiving cream to treat an injury. However, the issue is far
from over, as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed against the
decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
