Jannik Sinner made a winning return to Wimbledon by beating Stan Wawrinka 7-5 4-6 6-3 6-4 to move on to the 2nd round.
Sinner's weakest surface is grass and he spoke many times about the need to get better on the surface because, in theory, he should be very good. Strong movement, very attacking play, and flat groundstrokes all work really well on this surface if you have experience on it. He doesn't but he made a very step towards that by beating Wawrinka in four sets.
Wawrinka is slowly playing his final years on the Tour as she simply can't keep up with the est anymore. It remains to be seen whether he will go the Murray route and play on despite that but for today was too much for him. He did win the 2nd set after Sinner played a bit too lose but overall it was not enough. Once Sinner finally established order the match was over.
Wawrinka could not keep up with his younger opponent although there might have been an alley towards a victory. Wawrinka was pretty solid when he hit his first serve but it happened rarely and not nearly enough consistently to be able to do something with that. It's a shame because he won 69 % after hitting his first serve. He only hit it 49 % of the time though.
