Jannik Sinner soared past his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets at the 2023 Vienna Open, emerging victorious from the all-Italian clash 6-2, 6-4.
The World No. 4 survived a closely contested clash with Ben Shelton in the first round to set up the meeting with Sonego, who had come through qualifiers at the ATP 500 tournament before ousting Francisco Cerundolo in his opening match.
The World No. 52 started the match in Vienna confidently, producing a W-0 hold. Sinner then did the same in his first game, showing that even Sonego's best may not be enough.

Sinner fends off challenges from Sonego

From there, it didn't take long for Sinner to build up two break points on his opponent's next service game, successfully converting the first one to move ahead.
Sonego's next service game then went to a deuce, with Sinner getting two chances to break. However, the former managed to hold. This did not last long though, as Sinner got another opportunity the next time around which was converted into a double break after an error from Sonego.
The 22-year-old then served for the set but Sonego was not done fighting back and the two players had to battle it out on deuce, with the latter getting his first break point. In the end, though, Sinner was able to survive the back-and-forth to comfortably win the opener.
In the second set, Sonego took Sinner's third service game to a deuce, but the latter was able to hold. Immediately after this, Sinner built up two break points before Sonego fought to a deuce. Nevertheless, his opponent got the advantage and ultimately secured the break.
As in the first set, Sinner was then able to keep ahead and successfully served for the match. He will face either Frances Tiafoe or Gael Monfils in the quarter-final of the Vienna Open.
