Jannik Sinner is the champion at the 2024 Miami Open and becomes World Number Two for the first time. The Italian saw off Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday night in Florida and after losing his unbeaten streak last week in Indian Wells, he is back in the winners' circle.
Sublime throughout, Sinner adds to his titles at the Australian Open and Rotterdam Open so far this season with a streak that finished at 19-1 continuing to be added to in the winners column this tournament. That sits at 24-1 after this past week. A superb effort from the Italian who continues to show why he is certainly the must watch player in men's tennis right now.
Dimitrov started well as he found his first break point opportunity early on at 2-1 up. He couldn't convert though as Sinner survived the pressure. Sinner returned the favour on the break chances. He made Dimitrov crumble on the next chance. But the set was closer than expected as despite having a chance to finish it and go 5-2 up, he had to wait until 6-3 to do so.
The second set saw Dimitrov again start well in the story of the match before Sinner soon took over as he went 4-1 down and Sinner added another break before sealing the win 6-1 in incredible fashion. He will be World Number Two when the rankings are released on Monday and he will likely be the next player to attempt to dethrone Novak Djokovic atop the rankings. After the shock of losing his perfect record, he has rallied and found his top form again in Miami and now heads into the clay court season still with that confidence.
Dimitrov can leave Miami with his head held high as despite not winning his first ATP 1000 in some years, his career resurgence has been something to truly marvel at and wins over Alcaraz and Zverev this week proved he is here to stay. Just Sinner was too good on his day.
