Italy’s young tennis star Jannik Sinner joined an elite list of players to achieve something spectacular in a single season.
The 22-year-old is regarded as one of the most highly-rated young tennis players in the men’s singles category alongside Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and America’s Ben Shelton.
After having an impressive season, Sinner joined an elite list of players to win nine or more matches in a single season against top-five players since 2000. The only other players to do that in the last 23 years are Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Switzerland’s Roger Federer.
Sinner’s season came to a rather disappointing end as he lost in the final of the recently concluded ATP Finals in Turin where he lost to Djokovic in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
Sinner ended up winning four ATP titles in 2023. His first triumph came in February as he defeated America’s Maxime Cressy in the final in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-3 in Montpellier.
He then won the Canada Open after defeating Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the final with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Last month, Sinner defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev with a score of 7-6, 7-6 to lift the China Open. His last title triumph in 2023 came in Vienna where he got the better of Medvedev once again with a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
