Defending champion
Jannik Sinner was unable to retain his title at the 2025
Shanghai Masters, after retiring during his third round match due to injury. However, the Italian appears to have recovered, according to some lucky fans who ran into Sinner while shopping in Monte Carlo.
The World No.2 had just won the China Open title a few weeks ago, defeating American Learner Tien in the final. Subsequently, Sinner traveled to Shanghai in an attempt to defend his crown as the Asian swing leg of the ATP Tour comes to an end.
After cruising through his opening round match, Sinner squared off against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. Both me split the first two sets, before tragedy struck in the decider.
With several players already complaining about the intense humidity in Shanghai, Sinner would fall victim to the heat. The reigning Wimbledon champion began cramping in the middle of the third set, and was forced to retire while trailing 2-3. The cramps were so severe that Sinner had to be helped off the court as he could barely move under his own power.
Sinner ready to return to action, according to vacationing fans
The former World No.1 flew back to his residence in Monte Carlo, Monaco soon after his painful exit from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. However, he ran into a pair of Italian tennis fans, who happened to be vacationing in Monte Carlo at the time.
The married couple, who are owners of a bakery, were at a supermarket in Monte Carlo when they ran into the tennis superstar. Being huge fans of the four-time Grand Slam champion, they were pleased when Sinner acknowledged them, even taking a selfie with the delighted couple.
The husband, Ginetto, would reveal Sinner assured them he had recovered from his cramping episode in Shanghai.
"Before saying goodbye, we even chatted a little: Jannik told us he's fine now," said Ginetto in an interview with Italian news outlet Gazzetta di Parma.
Sinner has qualified for the year-ending ATP Finals in Turin, where he will be joined by Carlos Alcaraz and the other six elite ATP stars. The Italian is slated to compete at the
Paris Masters, which is the final ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the 2025 season.
