Joao Fonseca's debut in the top 100 has been officially confirmed, following an incredible start to the season. The 18-year-old sensation achieved a streak of 14 consecutive victories and stunned Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Australian Open, delivering one of the early upsets in the men’s draw.

It wasn’t just the victory itself but also the high level displayed by the Brazilian to dominate the world No. 9 Russian. Fonseca advanced to the second round but couldn’t overcome Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, who used his experience and composure to defeat the teenager 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Still, Fonseca demonstrated that he’s no longer just a player for the future but one who already has the tools to compete against the best in the world, despite being just 18 years old.

At the start of 2024, Fonseca was ranked world No. 730. He broke into the top 200 in July of that year, entered the top 150 in November, and just two months later reached a new milestone by becoming the youngest player in the top 100 at 18 years and 5 months old.

Currently, the Brazilian is ranked world No. 99 in the live rankings, although he could drop one spot if Laslo Djere – competing this week in Quimper – wins the Challenger title. Regardless, Fonseca will officially join the top 100 on Monday as he prepares for the Golden Swing in South America.

His upcoming challenges include the ATP 250 Argentina Open and the ATP 500 Rio Open, where he will once again compete in his home tournament. Just a year ago, he made his first splash on the Tour there by defeating Arthur Fils and former top-20 Christian Garin en route to the quarterfinals.
