Joao Fonseca makes major decision after injury as 2026 season comes to an early end

Joao Fonseca will not compete again in 2026 after deciding to prioritise his recovery rather than rush back for the final tournaments of the season. The Brazilian had initially targeted a return during the European indoor swing after skipping the Asian swing, but he has now abandoned those plans after assessing his condition with his team.
The decision means Fonseca will miss the Swiss Indoors Basel, where he was due to defend the first ATP 500 title of his career, as well as the Paris Masters. His absence brings an early end to a season that included a quarter-final run at Roland Garros but was increasingly disrupted by physical problems during the North American hard-court swing.
The 20-year-old has not played a competitive match since representing Brazil in the Davis Cup tie against Switzerland last month. His latest announcement confirms that he will now focus on preparing for 2027, rather than attempting a late-season comeback that could compromise his recovery ahead of the new campaign.
Fonseca currently sits at No. 29 in the ATP rankings, but missing the final tournaments of the year could see him lose ground before the Australian Open. His ranking when the season closes will influence his seeding in Melbourne, making his recovery period important not only for his fitness but also for his position heading into the first Grand Slam of 2027.

Fonseca abandons Basel title defence after injury-hit season

Fonseca confirmed that the decision followed discussions with his team, who agreed that returning before he was fully prepared would not be the right approach. The Brazilian had hoped to compete again during the European indoor swing, but he ultimately decided that protecting his physical condition was more important than attempting to salvage the final weeks of his campaign.
“My plan was to return during the European swing," the 20-year-old Brazilian said in social media. "But after talking with my team, I realised I’m still not 100% ready to compete at the level I’d like. And there is no need to rush things.”

The announcement ends Fonseca’s hopes of defending his Basel title, which he won in 2025 by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. That victory marked his first ATP 500 trophy and represented a significant milestone in his development. The Swiss tournament, scheduled for October 26 to November 1, will instead feature Novak Djokovic, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz.
Fonseca will also miss the Paris Masters, his final planned opportunity to collect ranking points before the end of the season. His abdominal injury first became a major concern during the Cincinnati Masters in August, where he withdrew before his third-round match after sustaining the problem against Christopher O’Connell.
He subsequently pulled out of the US Open, explaining that medical tests and treatment had shown he needed more time to recover fully.

Ranking concerns ahead of Australian Open 2027

The decision also carries consequences for Fonseca’s ATP ranking. Currently at No. 29, the Brazilian is expected to lose 550 points from his late-season schedule, including the 500 points earned for winning Basel last year and the 50 points he collected at the Paris Masters. That could see him fall towards No. 40 by the end of the season, depending on results elsewhere.
Such a drop would have implications for the Australian Open in January. Only the top 32 players in the rankings receive seeds at Grand Slam tournaments, meaning Fonseca is now at risk of arriving in Melbourne without that protection. His eventual ranking will depend on how other players perform during the closing weeks of 2026, but missing Basel and Paris removes two opportunities to defend or add points.
The Brazilian finishes the year with a 20-13 win-loss record. His best Grand Slam result was a quarter-final run at Roland Garros, while his season was also marked by withdrawals from several important tournaments.
After representing Brazil in the Davis Cup against Switzerland last month, he had hoped to return for the indoor swing, but the latest assessment changed those plans. “We decided to prioritise my health and put all focus on the 2027 season," the Brazilian stated. "Thank you so much for the support and love always. See you all on the court soon."
Fonseca’s immediate priority is now to recover before beginning preparations for the new campaign. Although his competitive season is over, his planned exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in São Paulo on December 12 is still scheduled to take place. The focus will be on ensuring he is ready for the 2027 season rather than risking another setback by returning too soon.
