ATP Rankings Update | Alexander Zverev bides his time as World No.1 spot comes into view

The Shanghai Masters is ongoing, but huge news on the ATP Tour has massive implications for the ATP rankings with the top spot now up for grabs.
World No.1 Jannik Sinner will have to enjoy his time at the top while it lasts. An impenetrable lead will soon be closed out by Alexander Zverev thanks to a knee injury that will keep him out for the rest of 2026. With title defences in Vienna, Paris and the ATP Finals not being played, the Italian will lose a huge number of points after what was a fine season.
Zverev has well and truly capitalised from this, as well as Carlos Alcaraz’s misfortunes. The best player in the world according to many, and that will be somewhat confirmed when he takes the World No.1 spot in the coming weeks. It will not come at the Shanghai Masters, but if he wins the title the gap will be less than 300 points. A huge chance for the German to tick off another huge accolade in his tennis career.
Alcaraz is back up and running and sailed through his opening test in Shanghai. He is the favourite for the title as he starts to look upwards. It will be a while before he breaks back in the top two, but there is virtually nothing to defend on clay and grass in 2027. That will be his chance.
Ben Shelton bolsters his position in fourth. Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev follow in suit. The Russian may rue getting those points on the board in Beijing. He will be defending a handful of points in the coming weeks and will be determined to continue his improved form.
Novak Djokovic will not make any more inroads up the rankings. He sits in eighth for now but will likely soon drop out of the top 10. He has managed just two wins at Masters 1000 level following his second round exit against Hubert Hurkacz. He will set his sights on Paris and the ATP Finals, with their chances to gain points in those events. Alex de Minaur and Frances Tiafoe round out the top 10 with Arthur Fils looking to get back in.

Reigning champion set to plummet

This time last year, Valentin Vacherot was outside the top 200. He was not high enough to get into qualifying. He then went on to win the tournament in what is one of the most unlikely title runs in sport, let alone tennis. Thanks to a strong 12 months since storming up the order, he will not fall drastically but can undergo damage limitation with a strong week.
That cannot be said for his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech. The Frenchman misses the tournament through injury and will be catapulted down the order with the points from his final run last year set to be swiped off his tally.
Hubert Hurkacz is igniting a positive period of form and is closing in on a return to the top 32. Stefanos Tsitsipas continues to climb and is enjoying another positive run in Shanghai.
The tournament is still young, and there are still loads more changes to be completed ahead of the tennis returning to Europe.
