WTA Rankings Update | Top three debut for Mirra Andreeva while Zheng Qinwen soars after China Open success
WTA
The China Open has offered another unique WTA 1000 champion in 2026, but beneath all of that numerous storylines and events have unfolded. A huge number of points from the event in Beijing have been dished out, with some huge notable breakthroughs in store in the WTA rankings.
Mirra Andreeva is one of the big winners. While she failed to claim the ultimate prize with a final defeat, she did break new ground. The 19-year-old jumped above American duo Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff to World No.3 She is just over 1000 points behind Aryna Sabalenka, who trails the World No.1 Elena Rybakina by a distance.
This rise was helped by Pegula and Gauff losing a significant amount of points. It will get worse for Gauff, who will not turn up to the Wuhan Open to defend her title. Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova could capitalise. They both rise a place with last year’s finalist Linda Noskova dropping two spots. Iga Swiatek remains ninth with Marta Kostyuk rounding out the top 10.
A last-16 for Iva Jovic pushes her to a new career high of 11th in the world. A top 10 debut seems almost inevitable now. A great semi-finals run for Elise Mertens boosts her ranking to 14th, and going the other way is the defending champion. Amanda Anisimova pulled out through injury, and 1000 points came off her tally. Out for the rest of the season, her current 17th place will get worse.

Despite losing in the China Open final, Mirra Andreeva rises into the top three in the WTA rankings
Zheng back among the elite following title triumph
While she was not able to get over the line in the final, Zheng Qinwen has officially made her return to the elite. A year with injury problems was culminated by a lack of consistency and a sharp ranking decline. She was playing in the US Open qualifiers a few weeks ago, now she is making WTA 1000 finals on home soil. She rises to 23th in the world, back in the top 30 after that famous title triumph, becoming the first Chinese player to win the China Open. In this form, she will soon be tempting a return to the top 10, and possibly even higher.
Nikola Bartunkova fell short of the final, but wins over Sabalenka and Muchova helped her best ever run at this level. She debuts in the top 30, a new career high of 29th a deserved reward. Bad news for Jasmine Paolini who falls out of the top 30 for the first time since October 2023. Her sharp decline after a torrid 2026 campaign continues.
There are many more smaller movements occurring in the rankings with players tussling for positions. Clara Tauson is out of the top 50, relegated to 53rd after dropping nine spots. New career highs for Lanlana Tarundee and Maria Timofeeva in 60th and 62nd, respectively.
Alina Charaeva was one of the big surprise packages. From out of nowhere, she defeated the World No.1 Rybakina with a stunning performance. Her last-16 showing earns her a top 100 breakthrough, having gained 19 places to slot in 99th.

Outside the top 100, Emma Raducanu can be found. There are questions about whether she will return in 2026 as her points slowly dwindle. Eva Lys also fell drastically, losing 33 positions to now find herself 135th. Last year’s quarter-finalist Sonay Kartal has barely played since the Sunshine swing but is starting to feature more following injury trouble. An inevitable fall was set to occur, dropping 40 positions to 169th.
