Joao Fonseca delivers brutal blow to 2026 campaign with big tournaments aborted

For the second year on the spin, Joao Fonseca has called a temporary halt to his 2026 campaign, again set to skip the Asian swing after a season that he has described as 'challenging.'

The Brazilian sensation broke onto the scene last year with some brilliant results. While there have been some exceptional performances over the last six months, overall there have been a lot of setbacks which have cost him the chance to develop more and challenge for more titles.

The latest problem prevented him from playing in the US Open, a bitter blow. This was due to an abdominal injury. It was the latest problem suffered as he was forced to watch on the sidelines as the best players in the world battle for glory in New York.

He made his return at the Davis Cup tie against Switzerland, representing his beloved Brazil with pride. They won the tie with the 20-year-old helping with a three-set win over Dominic Stricker. Fonseca was overwhelmed with emotions afterwards, barely being able to keep himself in check as he slumped on his chair with his team supporting him.

Since then, he has made the very tough decision to skip the Asian swing. Fonseca was supposed to compete in the Japan Open and Shanghai Masters, but that will not be the case as he confirmed the news on Instagram.

"Hi everyone. I wanted to share something with you all," he wrote. "2026 has been a very challenging year for me. On top of everything the profession demands, a series of injuries ended up taking me out of important tournaments and keeping me from playing the way I would like to.

"I know that’s just part of an athlete’s life, but even so, it’s still frustrating. I made a huge effort to return and represent Brazil in the Davis Cup, but I still need more time. I talked a lot with my team, and we came to the conclusion that the best decision right now is to listen to my body, give my mind and body a break, and skip the Asian swing. Thank you so much to everyone for all the support. See you soon!"

Fonseca will hope to come back fit and fresh ready for the next challenge. He also skipped the Asian swing last year, returning to the European indoor swing with a bang as he won the Swiss Indoors, his biggest title to date.

He will hope to follow in those footsteps with a lot of points set to be defended in a big end of the year. Although, his real focus may be on the start of 2027. He missed a lot of tennis Down Under but did feature in the Australian Open, losing in the first round. Brazilian tennis fans will be eager to next see him on court fit and fresh once more.
