John McEnroe was one of
the commentators at the
Australian Open final between
Novak Djokovic and
Stefanos Tsitsipas, and surprised everyone by not meeting one of the
quarterfinalists of the major.
The 7-time-Grand Slam
champion has been widely criticized for some of his comments. Initially, he
upset many fans that McEnroe repeatedly misspelled Tsitsipas's name. Tennis
journalist Ben Rothenberg criticized the former World No. 1
As McEnroe commented on
the Greek's path to the final, it was noted that the American did not know the
player
Jiri Lehecka, who had been beaten by Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.
“He played Lehecka –
who? – in the quarters,” said in the transmission.
Regarding the importance of the match, John McEnroe praised Nole for
preventing the pressure from playing a trick on him, considering that the
possibility of equaling
Rafael Nadal as the player with most Grand Slam in his
career was at stake.
"Will Novak feel the pressure? He's a human
being. And he wants to be considered as the greatest, have all the possible
records, especially the Grand Slam one," John McEnroe told Eurosport.
"That puts additional pressure on you. And I give
him credit for embracing that, talking about it, not walking away from it.”
