Former world number one Andy Murray’s wife, Kim Sears, has opened up about how difficult it was to watch the legendary British tennis star during the last days of his career. The 37-year-old, who is often regarded as the greatest British player in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, eventually retired from the sport on Thursday.
His last appearance on the tennis court was in the doubles category at the Paris Olympics. He and his partner Dan Evans were eventually knocked out of the competition after losing in the quarterfinal to the pair of America’s Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
While talking in a video posted on YouTube by the official channel of the Law Tennis Association (LTA), Murray's wife Kim opened up about how difficult it was to see the former world number one player play at the highest level during the final days of his career. She also highlighted Murray’s which makes him stand amongst the sport's greats.
"I really struggle now to watch Andy play,” she said. “I think probably as being a mum and having four other little people to worry about, I find it unbelievably stressful. I've never seen known anyone rise to a challenge like he does. I think he is at home when his back's against the wall and he's having to scrap for things. And I think that's obviously what's made him great. I mean, I just feel sick when he plays to be honest, it's a truly unpleasant feeling.”
Murray has struggled with fitness concerns throughout his career. It was for this reason he retired from professional tennis after the Australian Open in 2018. However, much to the delight of his fans, Murray returned to the court soon after and managed to play at the highest level for a long period. In his illustrious career, the Glasgow-born star won three Grand Slam titles. Two of them came while playing at home at Wimbledon, where he also lifted the US Open title. Other than that, Murray also won two Olympic gold medals for his country. Interestingly, both came in the singles category.
