British tennis superstar Andy Murray may be remembered by thousands for his on-court prowess and antics, but a door-opener at the Olympic Games remembers the former World No.1 for displaying a basic courtesy - saying "thank you".
Tom Garry volunteered as a door-opener at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Following Murray's retirement at the 2024 Olympics, Garry took to social media to share a heartwarming anecdote about his encounter with the British icon.
Garry began by stating he served as a volunteer at the 2012 Games in London, where he worked as a door-opener for athletes. He elaborated that several athletes walked through the door as he held it open, but only Andy Murray acknowledged him by thanking him and wishing him a good morning.
"At London2012 I volunteered at the tennis (great fun). One morning, my 'job' was to open a door that players walked through. Maybe 40, 50 players came past. Some were busy chatting, most walked by silently, focused. Only one said "thank you, good morning" - that was Andy Murray,” wrote Garry on Twitter.
This led to numerous other fans sharing their own stories of Murray's humility and polite nature, with several referring to him as a "gentleman".
"I volunteered at the dc open last year, was on a break and went to watch him practice and when he was done he gave an 8-10 year old boy his hat, and then stayed ~5 minutes to sign stuff and take pictures with people, just an all around cool guy" - wrote one user.
"I was part of the Village Management Team at 2012, met Andy Murray plenty of times and he always said hello, thank you etc etc,” recalled another fan.
"Yes! Saw him in Cincinnati a few years ago and he was one of few who actually stopped and talked with us. The other one was @CasperRuud98 Very nice guys @andy_murray," chimed in another fan.
