Novak Djokovic saw another chance to clinch his 25th Grand Slam come and go at the latest rendition of Wimbledon following a straight sets defeat to world number one and reigning champion Jannik Sinner. After the match, his true colours were shown with Rennae Stubbs unveiling what occurred behind the scenes.
The duo clashed this time last year as Sinner bossed proceedings from start to finish, putting in a very high level of performance and preventing Djokovic from getting any joy on court. It was a similar stary at this year's Wimbledon.
The Serbian would have been confident following his win over Sinner in the Australian Open where he won an immense five-set thriller enroute to his first Grand Slam final since Wimbledon 2024. He could not get the job done in the final, leaving him continuing to scramble for that elusive and unprecedented 25th Grand Slam.
Another opportunity rose at Wimbledon, but he was not able to get the job done against a supreme Sinner who has risen back up from that Roland Garros collapse, reminding the whole world of his capabilities.
He is on the hunt for a fifth Grand Slam title and first since defeating Carlos Alcaraz at SW19 in 2025. He set up a tie against Roland Garros champion Alexander Zverev following his 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over the seven-time champion.
The serving on display from the 24-year-old was immaculate. He was not broken once in a destructive showing that left Djokovic with little chance to find a route back into the match following him slipping up on serve a couple of times. The events in Melbourne would not be repeated as the 24-time Grand Slam champion trudged off court as he waits for the next opportunity for glory.

Djokovic given his flowers after sporting act

What was not picked up until after the match was the scenes that occurred behind the scenes away from the TV cameras and spotlight. Sinner was warming down from his clash in the gym when Djokovic re-appeared, sportingly congratulating him and all his team on a great effort on court.
Six-time major doubles champion Stubbs saw this and went straight onto X to praise Djokovic's actions. “Just saw @DjokerNole walk into the gym and congratulate Jannik’s entire team and Jannik again. The behind the scenes things you learn about players and their respect for each other is always so nice to see. Congratulations to both for a wonderful match. @janniksin just too good today.”
She would continue to give more insight, this time on the practice court where the Aussie had a firm eye on Sinner as he practiced. What caught her eye was the fact that the 24-year-old was doing a lot of serving. This is a crucial component on grass and a reason why Sinner is such a dangerous player to compete against.
He has worked over the years to get his serve to the highest level, mixing in lethal power with pinpoint accuracy. Break points do not come often against him, and that is down to persistent hard work away from the big stage.
“Was on the practice court yesterday next to Jannik [Sinner] and he must have served for a minimum of 30/40 minutes,” Stubbs wrote. “It’s obvious that he knew how important the serve was. He’s reaping the benefits of that work. You don’t get great by being lazy and not having the attention to detail to win.”
Practice makes perfect, and that is exactly the combination which has seen Sinner leap above the rest of the field. He has defeated Zverev in their last nine matches and won 12 consecutive sets going back the final of the 2025 Vienna Open. Zverev will need to put in a mega performance on Centre Court and hope Sinner has an off day if he is going to win a second Grand Slam title.
