Miomir Kecmanovic and Norbert Gombos are through to the 2nd round of
Paris Masters following victories over Millman and Goffin.
Norbert Gombos upset
David Goffin in the first round of the Paris Rolex Masters in a match that lasted a bit over an hour and a half. It's been a good showing from the Slovakian who defeated Goffin who has been struggling recently. Today the Belgian started well almost breaking Gombos early but the Slovakian held on and started playing better as time went on. Ultimately he broke Goffin at the perfect time to win the opening set 6-4. The 2nd set opened much better for David who took the early lead and held it to 4-4 until Gombos won three games in a row. The Belgian calmed down and forced a tiebreak where he had the upper hand early even having three consecutive break points but it didn't matter. A total collapse and five lost points in a row mean he was going home.
Joining Gombos in the next round will be Miomir Kecmanovic who had no issues defeating
John Millman in straight sets. The Serbian didn't enter this tournament in great form but his opponent today just did not have it. Millman had a draining week in Kazakhstan where he won his first career title and the long journey back to France didn't do him any good. From the start, Kecmanovic looked better and simply fresher. His serves were stronger, his baseline play was more consistent and his movements were sharper. Millman held on in the opening set for the most of it but Kecmanovic did well enough to win it 6-4. The 2nd set was much worse by Millman and Kecmanovic rushed to a 6-2 victory.
