Karen Khachanov played a really solid match to take down doubles partner Andrey Rublev in two sets 7-6(8) 6-4 advancing to the Madrid Open quarter-finals.
Khachanov has been playing a really strong season so far and he was able to add another big win. Rublev won Monte-Carlo but since then his level has been somewhat questionable. A very lacklustre showing in Banja Luka was followed up by a solid one here yet today Khachanov was able to find solutions.
It was not a bad match from Rublev yet he wasn't able to impose his level the way he wanted to. Khachanov was able to hold one pretty well in the first set as neither player allowed any break points. It was settled in the tiebreak with Rublev having a 5-2 lead but unable to hold. He allowed Khachanov to make it 6-6 and ultimately win it 10-8.
The second set was also impressive from the Russian as Rublev grew increasingly frustrated and risked more. It didn't pay off as the ball flew wide quite a few times causing him to lose his serve. When Khachanov got the break he needed, he calmly cruised to the victory 6-4 in the second set. A very solid 5 ace 24 winner performance.
