Alejandro Davidovich Fokina arrived at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 with the aim of repeating the feat he achieved in the 2022 edition after reaching the final of the tournament. However, the Spanish player has been completely swept by Karen Khachanov in 1st round by a score of 6-2 6-2.
In the first set, although Davidovich was not particularly erratic (73% of first serves), he could only win nine of the 16 he served, while Khachanov was unstoppable with his serve. The Russian won 15 of the 17 first serves he completed (88%), and also managed to break the two times the Spaniard allowed him to do so. With five winners, the set went to Khachanov with hardly any opposition, 6-2.
He offered a much more solid tennis in the early stages of the second set, but only until 2-2. He gave away his third serve completely to Khachanov, who went 2-3 breaking the Spaniard's serve with an empty game, and then he completely collapsed. The finalist of the last edition of Monte Carlo could not react at all to the extraordinary tennis that the Russian was posing on the Monegasque clay, which chained three other consecutive games to close the second and final set with another 6-2.
Karen Khachanov will face the winner of the match between Daniel Evans and Ilya Ivashka in the second round of Monte Carlo.
