Nick Kyrgios and
Thanasi Kokkinakis are not playing in the singles anymore but in the doubles they stunned number one seeds Mektic and Pavic.
The Croatian doubles had a historic season in 2021 destroying all other pairings in pretty much the majority of events they played. They arrived in Melbourne as the clear favourites for the event and were deserveadly number one seeds. Howevet they ran into hometown hopefuls Kyrgios and Kokkinakis and the Australians proved better.
The top-ranked Croatian pairing was undone by a strong serving performance from their opponents, who fired 17 aces and won 88 per cent of points behind first serves. Kokkinakis and Kyrgios took the first set tie-break with their fourth set point, before securing the only break of the second set to run out 7-6(8), 6-3 winners.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis celebrated the victory with the fans and looked very motivated. If they stay that way and if they continue to play as well as they did, Australian fans might want to follow their journey closely.
