Stefanos Tsitsipas played the night match yesterday against John Isner and he was able to overcome losing the first set to win 5-7 6-3 7-6(3) 6-1.
It was a fun match that featured several great rallies which is not something you expect when you see John Isner player. The American likes to keep points brief but Tsitsipas was able to extend rallies. He needed to if he hoped to win and win he did. Tsitsipas did not play his best in the opening set and on the match he said:
“The match was pretty much one pattern, kept repeating itself. It was kind of difficult to adjust, I felt my body a little cold, a little bit of anger, frustration, I let it out, that eventually woke me up to be able to handle future situations a little better.”
Tsitsipas felt much better in the 2nd set especially after breaking Isner's serve. His play stabilized and he was able to find ways to win rallies more often. When he won the 3rd set tiebreak Tsitsipas completely took over in the 4th. On playing John Isner he said:
“He’s one of the toughest guys to play, the serve is obviously a big obstacle. I didn’t have the best start, things started going my way in the second set, I started finding my returns and my rhythm from the baseline and I think my head kind of cleaned up and led me to that important victory.”
Tsitsipas is now the favourite in the bottom half as his biggest competition is Daniil Medvedev who is looking good in Paris but he is historically not as comfortably on clay as the Greek. That makes him a favourite to reach the final of the
French Open.
