Andy Murray has played some epic matches in his career yet yesterday's win over Tiafoe in Antwerp is his longest 'best of 3 match' ever according to him.
It was a truly spectacular match that lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes with Murray edging out Tiafoe in three tie breaks. Murray was a break down in the final set but rallied to force a tiebreak. In it, he saved two match points to ultimately win it 10-8. After the match, Andy looked at the time of the match and said:
“I think that’s the first time in my career I’ve played a 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 [match]. I don’t think I’ve ever played a match like that. I think it’s the longest three-set match I’ve played by quite a distance. I’m tired right now, obviously, it was an unbelievable battle.”
Murray has always been known for his unbelievable fitness with the Brit rarely ever dropping his level due to fatigue, even in very long matches. While Murray sustained a high level throughout the match, he did admit that his body is old now and recovery takes a lot more time than before:
“Nowadays obviously my body is old now. I’ve played a lot of matches on the Tour. I don’t mind playing long matches, but that was taking it to another level. Brilliant match, amazing atmosphere, thanks to everyone who came and supported. It’s just so nice to be back and playing in front of crowds again.”
Murray hit 21 aces and a few great shots came when he faced those match points. Those points proved crucial and Murray was able to move on at the event which he won in 2019.
