Lorenzo Musetti was always a good clay player and he proved it once more by completely outplaying Cameron Norrie 6-1 6-2 6-4 at the 2023 Roland Garros (French Open).
The Italian has been playing well all throughout this year's season even beating Novak Djokovic. He brought the same level to Roland Garros where he already played well in the past and it ended up with a straight sets win over Norrie. The opening set was a brilliant display from Musetti who quite literally took apart Norrie 6-1.
The Brit faced two French players in the first two rounds barely battling past Benoit Paire and then easily beating Lucas Pouille. This one wasn't as good for him as he was quite erratic with 9 unforced errors. Musetti was far more balanced in his approach and it worked well. The second set was very similar as Musetti still had a composed approach while Norrie kept spamming errors.
The Brit tried to up his aggressiveness in this set but it didn't really work. Musetti still cruised 6-2 as Norrie posted 20 unforced errors in this one. He also had 11 winners but that wasn't enough. The final set was a rather interesting one. Musetti once again opened with an early break but Norrie was able to pull it back and make it a bit interesting. Still, it didn't last long as the Italian got another timely break being able to finish things off in two sets.
Just not a very good performance overall from the Brit. Far too lacklustre from the baseline with 24 winners and 49 unforced errors. Musetti with a pretty balanced 24 - 23 in this one. A very solid match and an upcoming clash with either Alcaraz or Shapovalov. A match against Alcaraz would be a proper delight.
