The long wait has finally come to an end for Alejandro Davidovich
Fokina. After years of trying, he finally has an ATP Tour title under his belt following
defeating Ethan Quinn 7-6(4), 6-3 at the
Mallorca Championships.
Poetically on home soil, the Spaniard has been regarded as
the best player on tour not to have previously won an ATP title for some time
now. Close calls and ongoing frustrations have been very common when coming to
the latter stages of a tournament. He has lost in five ATP finals, four of them
coming last year.
He was not set to do the same mistake in
Mallorca. The number two seed
had just dropped one set enroute to the final, taking down Adam Walton, Grigor
Dimitrov and Fabian Marozsan as he closed in on glory.
The first set took over an hour after Quinn broke back when
Davidovich Fokina attempted to serve it out, but he got there in the end with a
7-4 win in the tiebreak. A single break in the second set proved to be enough
for him to finally get over the line.

It was Quinn, who in his first ever ATP final, that was piling
on the pressure in the early stages. He failed to take two break points
following two comfortable holds to love as Davidovich Fokina took some time to
settle.
He eventually did and found the breakthrough in the ninth
game. He would attempt to serve it out but found himself 0-40 down. The American
broke back with his second break point and the contest went to a tiebreak.
Davidovich Fokina took a 4-2 lead at the change of ends and
was able to keep his cool in the blistering heat in Mallorca to take the first
set. He was one set away from finally breaking his duct on the big stage.
He was the one in control now, putting the pressure on the
Quinn serve. He failed to take a solitary chance in the second game before finding
himself 0-40 ahead. Quinn cut the deficit short but could not get back level as
Davidovich Fokina took a giant stride towards victory.
A hold of serve later, Davidovich Fokina was one game away from
the title. Quinn forced the 27-year-old to serve it out. Davidovich Fokina needed no second invitation, getting it done with a big ace to confirm his
maiden ATP title. He let out a big roar on the court in front of the Spanish spectators in a huge moment of joy and relief.
