The long wait has finally come to an end for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. After years of trying, he finally has an ATP Tour title under his belt following defeating Ethan Quinn 7-6(4), 6-3 at the Mallorca Championships.
Poetically on home soil, the Spaniard has been regarded as the best player on tour not to have previously won an ATP title for some time now. Close calls and ongoing frustrations have been very common when coming to the latter stages of a tournament. He has lost in five ATP finals, four of them coming last year.
He was not set to do the same mistake in Mallorca. The number two seed had just dropped one set enroute to the final, taking down Adam Walton, Grigor Dimitrov and Fabian Marozsan as he closed in on glory.
The first set took over an hour after Quinn broke back when Davidovich Fokina attempted to serve it out, but he got there in the end with a 7-4 win in the tiebreak. A single break in the second set proved to be enough for him to finally get over the line.
