Martina Navratilova fires back at fan over 'convicted felon" comments about Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca

WTA great Martina Navratilova was forced to come to the defense of rising tennis star Joao Fonseca over the weekend after a fan made some unsavory comments following the Brazilian's victory at the Argentina Open.

Already touted as a breakout star for the 2025 season, Fonseca gave fans a taste of what is to come by reaching the final at the Argentina Open. The 18-year-old looked like an experienced veteran as he swept past the competition, before defeating fifth-seeded home favorite Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to clinch his first main draw ATP singles title.

Fan takes shot at Fonseca, Navratilova fires back

Although the majority of the tennis community seemed pleased with the young Brazilian's progress, a few expressed negativity. After the official Tennis Channel uploaded a clip of Fonseca celebrating his title win on the court, several fans showered the new ATP titlist with praise.

However, a particular fan did not share in the commendations, instead choosing to make a harsh comment at the young man's expense.

"You’re convicted felon," wrote the fan.

Navratilova seemed to get wind of this comment, as she came to Fonseca's defense, calling the fan's appalling behavior.

"And you're an a**," wrote the 18-time Grand Slam champion.

Nonetheless, Fonseca appears to be heading in the right direction, and has made his future goals clear, winning Grand Slam titles and attaining the World No.1 ranking.
