Grigor Dimitrov was in some of the best form of his career in the latter half of 2023 reaching the final in Paris in his final tournament of the season and he has brought that to the 2024 season with an epic win over Andy Murray 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at the Brisbane International.
Epic due to the play from both with Murray in particular in the first set in utterly stunning form and he just couldn't carry that through when it looked like amid another shocking draw for the former World No.1, he was going to battle through to a confidence boosting win.
After an utterly sublime opening stanza, Murray broke Dimitrov for the set 6-4 capitalising at the right time in a drop off from the Bulgarian and he looked to mount his surge from there.
But it was the 100th time in Dimitrov's career that he won a match coming back from a set down as like Murray he has the real fight and determination in him. This determination was also there in the second set as Dimitrov broke the strings in his racquet twice on two different points and still found a way to win both and went on to use that as a lucky omen to go on and seal the set. From there, it was fairly plain sailing for Dimitrov as Murray lost his serve back to back fairly comprehensively and aside from the last game of the match did not get a single break point opportunity on Dimitrov's serve to mount a fight in the deciding set.
Another devastating loss for Murray, but a match that truly shows what the tennis world is in for in 2024. It comes on a day where Holger Rune won through also in Brisbane, but Ben Shelton headed out. The second seed this week though is through as Dimitrov pulls into the second round.
