Jannik Sinner is through to the semi-finals of the 2024 China Open in Beijing after taking down Jiri Lehecka 6-2, 7-6 in the end surviving a potential third set in the process.
He now faces the winner of Andrey Rublev and unheralded Yunchaokete Bu in the semi-finals. The winner will then face off against either Carlos Alcaraz or Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Sinner has undergone yet another doping storm this past week with the news that WADA will appeal the decision to clear him but as ever with the Italian ace, he has let his tennis do the talking and continues his great form.
Defending his title, it is a tournament that he loves and he started off imperiously winning the opening set with near no resolve from Lehecka who was broken to start at 3-1 and then again for Sinner to seal the set. The Italian barely offered any crumbs for comfort on his serve and surged into the lead.
While the second set proved to be a more even affair with no player able to force the break and the impetus. It went all the way to a tie-break as a result with minimal responses from either side of the ball aside from Sinner offering up potential break chances late in the set. But he also got away with it as Lehecka went one point away at 6-4 up and missed two set points and Sinner responded to win and save his skin.
