The 2024 United Cup will be heading back to Germany and the team of Alexander Zverev, Laura Siegemund, Maximillian Marterer and Angelique Kerber after a heroic win over Poland's leading lights Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz in the mixed doubles by the former pair.
After riding their luck throughout the tournament including being the second-placed team to move through, surviving match points in a spellbinding affair against Australia, and then Hurkacz missed multiple match points against Alexander Zverev before the German returned to seal the victory.
In the doubles decider, Zverev and Siegemund took an early lead taking the break at 2-1 up. They went 4-2 up from there and this break was pivotal to complete the set. It was more back and forth in the second set with Swiatek and Hurkacz going 2-0 up. Zverev and Siegemund kept up the pace, but after back-and-forth breaks, it was Swiatek and Hurkacz who sent it to the match tie-break.
Zverev and Siegemund blazed an early trail going 6-1 up against the Polish duo, but first to 10 meant that they lost a few more points before finally sealing the deal 10-4. A superb week from the German team who now add the United Cup to their resume.
Zverev anchored his country to victory throughout the week, while Kerber gets a title in her first tournament back as a mother. A superb story to start the 2024 season.
