Novak Djokovic pulled double duty as he anchored Serbia to victory in their 2024 United Cup opener against China who had already got a notch on the board by defeating the Czech Republic.
Djokovic secured the first point earlier today by taking down Zhizhen Zhang while Qinwen Zheng anchored China as she did against Czech Republic with a singles win over Olga Danilovic. In the end, the World No.1 proved the hero again with a 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 win as he completed it just short of New Year as he urged people to stay in their seats and count down to midnight.
After edging past in their opening set 6-4 with Djokovic producing a lot of pressure on their return, the Chinese were much better as they broke early and took a 4-0 lead. They looked to be surging into the ascendancy taking the set 6-1.
But the Serbians snapped out of their slump in time for the match tie-break. It started close as neither team was able to create any separation before Djokovic snapped into another gear and powered them home. Next will be Czech Republic for Serbia, with China having already won a match putting themselves in pole position if the former win again to join them from the group.
