Jannik Sinner has 50 wins for the season and leads the tour with 30 on hard courts after sealing an easy win on Thursday against American ace Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.
The World No.1 has enjoyed an incredible 2024 winning five titles including the Australian Open and will be one of the favourites this week in the US. The 23-year-old Italian pounced on errors from Michelsen as well as forcing it.
It was a lesson in experienced top level crunch tennis as he hit freely and produced superb weight and depth of shot to seal a second win of the month against the 20-year-old. He beat Michelsen at the Cincinnati Open and handed him another defeat here.
He now faces Christopher O'Connell and was delighted to force his way through. "I am very happy to get through, he is a very tough opponent," Sinner said. "We had a match in Cincinnati one week ago, so I knew a little what to expect."
"I always love New York, the first Grand Slam I played in the main draw, so I have great memories and I always enjoy playing here," Sinner added.
Whilst it has been an upset bonanza at times on Day Four with Tomas Machac upsetting 16th seed Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the third round. While Matteo Arnaldi joined Sinner in the third round as did Jordan Thompson who now faces the Italian.
The Aussie ace saw off Hubert Hurkacz in a stunning win 7-6, 6-1, 7-5 earlier this evening to cement his spot and hand Hurkacz a damning loss after his latest miracle return from a meniscus tear only this month.
