It is another poor Grand Slam for Mirra Andreeva after previously reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 French Open. She has been bounced out of the US Open by Ashlyn Krueger in the second round.
Krueger who recovered last round to defeat Shuai Zhang who has not won a match in the longest time ever on the WTA Tour took Andreeva to task who never quite got going in a 6-1, 6-4 win in favour of the American.
It is a surprising defeat with Krueger albeit getting wins as of late having to play through qualifiers in recent weeks to get into the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open. But those wins have perhaps put her in good stead. In Canada, she only lost to eventual champion Jessica Pegula in the Last 16 after seeing off Leylah Fernandez.
In Cincinnati, she was defeated by Diana Shnaider albeit after defeating Naomi Osaka in qualifying and then seeing off Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic in three sets. So perhaps a player to have kept an eye on especially with Andreeva's hit and miss form.
She lost to Iga Swiatek in a narrow loss in Cincinnati after her Olympic silver medal with Diana Shnaider who also won earlier tonight. This after sealing her maiden title at the Iasi Open.
While it was the evening thus far of the shock losses as Jessica Bouzas Maneiro saw off Katie Boulter in two narrow sets both 7-5 to move through. Sara Errani also took down Collins slayer Caroline Dolehide also in two sets. Iga Swiatek on the other hand is having no issues at the moment.
The World No.1 opened the first set with a 6-0 win and is easing past Ena Shibahara in her second round tie at Flushing Meadows so varied success for the big names.
