Jack Draper
defeated Alexander De Minaur in straight sets to reach the
US Open semifinals.
The 25th seed continues his impeccable form, advancing without dropping a set
at Flushing Meadows after his 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 victory.
The first
set started with irregularities on both sides, especially with their serves.
Both players broke each other's serve early on, but Draper managed to break
twice in a row, taking a 4-1 lead after about 20 minutes. Break opportunities
persisted on both sides, with De Minaur saving four break points on his serve,
but Draper eventually took the set 6-3.
Both
players had a first-serve percentage below 50%, leading to frequent rallies in
which the British No. 1 showed greater effectiveness with 12 winners compared
to just 5 from his opponent. He also had a slight advantage in unforced errors,
with 11 compared to De Minaur’s 13.
In the
second set, Draper again secured an early lead with a break in the third game.
The Brit called the physio after breaking serve, leading 2-1, to have his right
quadriceps taped due to some discomfort in his leg. Within minutes, he was up
4-2. As in the first set, both players had several break opportunities,
especially Draper, although De Minaur managed to break back and won three
consecutive games.
However,
Draper bounced back and won the last three games in a row to take the set 7-5.
The Brit’s impeccable level was reflected in a 69% first-serve percentage,
winning 80% of those points, and adding another 17 winners to his tally.
In the
final part of the match, De Minaur showed fighting spirit but couldn’t match
Draper's level, who is more than inspired, having won 15 consecutive sets at
the US Open without even playing a tiebreak. Two consecutive breaks ultimately
gave Draper the victory, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.
The
question now is whether the Brit can maintain this level in his first Grand
Slam semifinal, as he will face the winner of Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev
in a bid to emulate Andy Murray's success.
