Jannik Sinner triumphs over Daniil Medvedev with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory to advance to the semifinals of the US Open. The Italian bounced back after an unrecognizable second set and ultimately proved superior to the 2021 champion. The world No. 1 has now reached his fourth career Grand Slam semifinal.
The match began with Medvedev showing signs of disconnection, committing a double fault on the first point. The Russian managed to hold his service game despite facing a break point, but Sinner seized his first opportunity in the next game to take the lead.
Both players struggled with less than 50% of first serves in, although Sinner was considerably more effective with 91% of first serves won (compared to Medvedev's 64%). The Moscow-born player was imprecise throughout the set, committing 15 unforced errors to Sinner's 6. The 2024 Australian Open champion secured a second break to extend his lead and closed the set 6-2.
At the start of the second set, it seemed Sinner's dominance would continue, but Medvedev stepped up under pressure, recovering with two consecutive breaks to take a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Sinner couldn't maintain the intensity from the first set, while Medvedev improved his accuracy on returns and became more aggressive, hitting 13 winners to just 4 from Sinner. The Russian eventually took the set 6-1.
From there, the world No. 1 demonstrated why he has been the most consistent player of the year, finding solutions to reduce unforced errors and regaining confidence, while Medvedev's level dropped. The Italian secured two consecutive breaks and quickly led 5-0.
Medvedev faced three break points at 0-40 in the sixth game, which would have given him the first bagel of his career in a major draw. However, he used strong first serves to at least hold one service game, though Sinner still won the set 6-1.
This time, the Italian maintained his level, keeping his service effective while Medvedev struggled to keep up. Both had break opportunities, but it was Sinner who took advantage in the seventh game. The 23-year-old had a match point when leading 5-3 with Medvedev serving, but couldn't convert.
Nonetheless, Sinner sealed the win on his serve, closing the match 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 and advancing to his fourth Grand Slam semifinal, and his first at the US Open. His next opponent will be 25th seed Jack Draper, who is on a hot streak without dropping a set in the tournament and easily eliminated Alex de Minaur.
