Matteo Berrettini suffered an injury during the ATP Finals in Turin which left the Italian devastated about not being able to compete.
Berrettini was looking forward to playing in Turin all year but an abdominal injury cut short his run in his native country and Berrettini took it hard. He was very emotional about not being able to play and he confirmed it once more during an interview with Sportface:
"For those who have known me for a long time, you know how much it takes on an emotional level when I go out on the court. Playing the Finals in Italy was something I thought was impossible,
having qualified and deserving to be there but not being able to take
advantage of it, it was hard. There have been some crying, but if I look back at the year I realize it was good.”
Berrettini is now fully healed and back on the practice courts preparing for the 2022 season. His first stop will be the
ATP Cup where he will try to lead Italy to victory. Winning team competitions with Italy has been a longtime dream of Berrettini who said he wants to win the Davis Cup especially:
"I want to lead Italy to win the Davis Cup. It’s a goal, I’ve never hidden it. We have a very strong and varied team. I have followed the games of the last edition from a distance, and we have seen that the group is united and can do well against anyone.”
Berrettini was one of the first players that got vaccinated when the vaccine was available and he did it because he thinks it's the right thing to do. Italy was badly affected by the virus and it's a very emotional subject for many Italians including Berrettini. Asked about the vaccine mandate he said:
“I have my own ideas about vaccines and what is right for me. Last year doing two weeks of quarantine was difficult and I do not wish it on anyone, if the solution was to get vaccinated to avoid all this, then I think it is right, but it is a complex speech that opens many brackets. For me, it is the right thing to do to get the world going again.”
