Andy Murray replaced his coach Jamie Delgado with Jan De Witt ahead of the 2022 season and in a recent talk, he explained how careful of a decision it was.
Andy Murray is trying to complete his comeback in tennis in 2022 with the Brit still showing tennis class from time to time. In order to reach his goals, he made a change to his coaching staff which was enriched by Jan De Witt, a coach who has worked with many great tennis players in the past. Asked about what made Murray do it, he said:
“This decision is an important one for me because obviously, I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be playing so I want to make sure the person that’s with me for the last period of my career is the right one. That’s why I’m going about it this way.”
It's an interesting revelation by Murray seemingly coming to terms with the fact that his career won't last several years beyond this season which makes this season very important. De Witt is known as a no-nonsense type of coach who is very direct with his players. He also has no fear of getting fired admitting to ATP on his philosophies:
“My coaching philosophy is very simple. For the player being in the present moment during the match. That is the only way. Action-oriented thinking. The only thing that works. What is the action that wins me the next point? If you are not thinking about the next action, you are always going end up thinking about the past or the future."
Murray will start his season tomorrow with a match against Dan Evans in Abu Dhabi. If he wins he will continue to play at the event but if he loses he will be eliminated.
