Alexander Zverev got his first win at the 2021 ATP Finals with Matteo Berrettini forced to retire after sustaining an abdominal injury.
A very good match was played between Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini before it ended. The first set featured strong play by both players with Zverev being better early and Berretttini later. The German failed to use several break points early with Matteo saving them with good serves. Towards the end of the set Berrettini played better doing a lot of damage with his forehand.
He had several break points that were actually set points but the German held on. A brilliant tiebreak was played between the two with both having chances but it was Zverev who ultimately prevailed in a very tight one. The start of the 2nd set was very similar but during a rally, Berrettini hurt himself. He immediately called the physio due to intense pain and after a brief MTO, he continued to play.
After serving a very weak serve Berrettini realized he would not be able to go and was forced to retire. A sad end for Berrettini who will most likely be replaced by another Italian in Sinner moving forward. A good start for Zverev albeit not the way he wanted it to end.
