Daniil Medvedev used rain as a good way to reset after losing the opening set to win the next two against Bublik at the National Bank Open.
Top seed Daniil Medvedev moved on at the National Bank Open in Toronto by defeating
Alexander Bublik 4-6 6-3 6-4. The match was a very interesting one between players who are capable of playing really great tennis. Medvedev had his struggles early as he was once again bothered by the conditions.
He was attacked on his 2nd serve by Bublik with great success for the Kazakhstani player and it proved decisive. Bublik was able to win the set with 6-4 despite hitting only 41% of his first serves. At the start of the 2nd set, the match got suspended due to rain.
Players returned an hour and a half later and Medvedev looked much sharper in the match. He used the break to reset and adjust his playstyle with great success. Bublik did not serve well on his 2nd serve this time around and the Russian used that to his advantage. He himself was almost unplayable when serving so that helped win the set with 6-3.
The 3rd set featured an early break for Medvedev which was crucial for the Russian. Bublik served better as time went on but still struggled with points on his 2nd serve. Medvedev was once again solid overall and finished off the match with 6-4 not allowing a single break point in the final set.
