Daniil Medvedev is in great shape. He already confirmed it at the US Open, where he reached the final after getting rid of Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals (although he lost against Novak Djokovic in the title match), and now he is continuing with this great dynamic at the
China Open 2023.
The Russian, who already defeated Tommy Paul in the first round, has managed to defeat Alex de Miñaur in two sets in the round of 16 of the tournament by a score of 6(3)-7, 3-6. Medvedev managed to tip the balance on his side in a first set that had everything.
The first set started with de Miñaur losing his serve at 1-1. This allowed Medvedev to lead his opponent until 2-4, where he struck another blow to take a 2-5 lead. However, the Australian managed to recover by winning four consecutive games to take a 6-5 lead when it looked like he had lost the set. Medvedev won his serve and the set went to a tiebreak.
The tiebreak was the key moment of the match. Everything was equal until, with 3-4 in favor of Daniil Medvedev, Alex de Miñaur slacked at the crucial moment and lost his two consecutive serves, allowing the Russian to have up to three set points to get 3-6 up. He only needed one to take a wild first set.
In the second and final set, de Miñaur was quick to show the psychological blow of losing the previous set, which he had miraculously managed to overcome. With 1-2 for Medvedev, the Russian got a break to maintain a lead that would not disappear at any time. At 2-5 and serving, the Australian saved a match ball. However, at 3-5 Daniil Medvedev was not going to let the opportunity slip away and was going to certify his qualification for the quarterfinals.
In the next round, Medvedev will face the winner of the match between his compatriot Andrey Rublev and Frenchman Ugo Humbert.
