It was a trouble-free evening on Louis Armstrong Stadium for Daniil Medvedev, as the third seed cruised to the third round of the US Open.

The Russian defeated Australian Christopher O'Connell 6-3 6-2 6-4 in a commanding display of power and precision. Having finished runner-up last year, Medvedev seems set on bettering his performance. The World No.5 41 of 49 points on his first serve, hitting nine aces in the process. Furthermore, he broke his opponent on four occasions, while saving both break points faced. The third seed has been quietly winning his matches without much fanfare, and looks set to continue his impressive run. He next faces American wild card J.J. Wolf, who defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2 6-4 6-3 earlier in the day.
In a match that lasted close to five hours, Marton Fucsovics upset 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-7(5) 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4 6-1 to advance to the third round. Dimitrov was plagued by inconsistencies, as he hit 74 unforced errors coupled with nine double faults. Furthermore, he faced an astounding 35 break points, and was broken on eight of them. However, credit must be given to Fucsovics, who maintained his composure despite failing to convert on his numerous break point opportunities. The Hungarian committed less errors than Dimitrov, and minimized his double faults to just three. He meets American Frances Tiafoe, who prevailed 7-6(8) 3-6 1-6 6-3 6-3 over Aussie John Millman in a four-hour marathon match.
