Daniil
Medvedev has an impressive record against Italian tennis players, including
Jannik Sinner,
Matteo Berrettini, and
Lorenzo Sonego.
The World
No. 3 has established himself as one of the top players in recent years,
reaching the number one ranking and consistently remaining in the top 12 for
the past four years. He notably secured the 2021 US Open title by defeating
Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev
has had a strong year, currently ranking just behind Novak Djokovic and Carlos
Alcaraz. However, his performances in Grand Slam events in 2023 have been
somewhat inconsistent.
He reached
the semifinals of Wimbledon but was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz. In contrast, he
experienced early exits in the Australian Open and French Open.
Despite a
recent quarterfinal loss at the National Bank Toronto Open to Alex de Minaur,
Medvedev extended his impressive record against Italian opponents by defeating
Matteo Arnaldi and
Lorenzo Musetti. He holds a remarkable 6-0 head-to-head
record against the 21-year-old Jannik Sinner, including two victories in finals
this year at the Miami Open and Rotterdam Open.
Against
former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, Medvedev boasts a perfect 3-0
record, with two of those wins coming at the ATP Cup in Australia. He also
leads 2-0 in head-to-head matches against Lorenzo Sonego.
While Fabio
Fognini is the only Italian to have secured a victory against Medvedev, with a
notable win in the first round of the 2017 Cincinnati Open, the overall
head-to-head record currently stands at 4-1 in Medvedev's favor. This includes
a match during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Recently,
young Italian player Matteo Arnaldi, ranked World No. 66, added to Medvedev's
list of defeated opponents, giving Medvedev a 1-0 record against him. Medvedev
also maintains a 1-0 record against Lorenzo Musetti.
Medvedev's
next challenge will be at the Cincinnati Open, where he received a first-round
bye and is awaiting his opponent. His record against Italian players could
potentially see more wins, as he is set to face the winner between British
player Daniel Evans and Italian standout Lorenzo Musetti.
