With the Olympic Games in the periphery for a lot of tennis stars, the ranking action is still ongoing with the DC Open taking place over the next week (29 July - 4 August, 2024) in Washington with the men's draw now confirmed.
Andrey Rublev has medal memories from Tokyo but decided against applying to play under a neutral banner and instead has taken a wildcard into DC. He will face either Luca van Assche or Arthur Cazaux.
Other than Rublev, it is mainly a stacked American contingent with many snubbing Olympic glory despite qualifying. Ben Shelton has for some time been vocal about not wanting to play in Paris this time and instead is second seed this week. He faces a qualifier or Facundo Diaz Acosta.
For many American's, it will be down to the surface change and also that most of their bread and butter tournaments come in the weeks that follow in Canada, Cincinnati and finally the US Open. Third seed is Karen Khachanov while other Americans involved include Frances Tiafoe, Sebastian Korda, Alex Michelsen and Brandon Nakashima.
Exciting Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will also take to the States for the first time when he plays in DC. A lot of top ties and with it being an ATP 500, a chance to seal an early march at a historic tournament.
The men's DC Open Tennis, part of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, is one of the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournaments in the United States. Founded in 1969, it was established by Arthur Ashe, Donald Dell, and John A. Harris. The tournament is held at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington, D.C., and is known for being one of the longest-running professional tennis events held in an equal-access public park.
Over the years, the DC Open has attracted some of the biggest names in tennis. The tournament is part of the ATP 500 series, which means it draws a highly competitive field of players. American tennis legend Andre Agassi holds the record for the most titles at this event, having won it five times (1990-91, 1995, 1998-99). Other notable champions include Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Yannick Noah, Andy Roddick, and Juan Martín del Potro.
The tournament has evolved significantly since its inception. Originally focused on the men's game, it expanded to include a women's draw, making it a combined ATP-WTA event. This expansion has helped to elevate the tournament's status and broaden its appeal.
