French tennis star
Gael Monfils has joined an elite club of players
with 350 or more wins on the ATP tour.
The 36-year-old has struggled with form recently and results have not gone his way.
However, Monfils has joined the list of active players
with 350 or more wins on the ATP Tour.
He cemented his place on the ladder after defeating Greece’s
Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round of the Omnium Banque Nationale Canadian
Open with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
The list featured the likes of the 23-time Grand Slam winner
world number two Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, 22-time majors winner Spain’s Rafael
Nadal, former world number one Britain’s Andy Murray, 2014 US Open winner Marin
Cilic, fellow French player Richard Gasquet and John Isner.
Monfils achievement is also a special one as he is one of
the three players on that list who won 350 or more matches on the ATP tour without
ever winning a Grand Slam. The other two were Gasquet and Isner.
The Paris-born will be hoping that he will continue his form
and produce the goods in the upcoming US Open which is set to begin in less
than a month’s time.
Monfils will now face Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in the
third round of the competition on Thursday.
