Day Four of the 2023 Canadian Open is here and the Last 16 is too with the Omnique Banque Nationale in Montreal heading into the latter stages with most of the top names still heavily involved.
World No.1, Iga Swiatek among them as well as fellow Big Three members, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. As ever, we will preview another day of action stacked with top WTA talent as the Quarter-Finals start to get confirmed.
Confirmed last night under the radar mainly due to the other main talking points, we will see the second part of the Iga Swiatek - Karolina Muchova rivalry play out albeit on a different surface on Thursday. Of course facing off in the final of Roland Garros which the World Number One won, Muchova will look to settle the score.
It was a match that could've taken place even on the hard courts in Warsaw, but Muchova fell early amid the backdrop of a potential final between the pair. Part two will happen though. Muchova going about her business on the outer courts seeing off Anastasia Potapova and Sorana Cirstea to get to this point, while Swiatek surged past Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday evening.
Also on the main court are three other tasty ties as Marketa Vondrousova who ended the run of Caroline Wozniacki continues her first tournament since Wimbledon against one of the most in-form players on the WTA Tour right now in Coco Gauff. With Brad Gilbert by her side, she won in DC last week and eased past Katie Boulter yesterday. She also leads 1-0 in Head to Head albeit all the way back in 2021.
Then it is the turn of two players firmly on the comeback trail, but still showing that with consistent game time that quality is firmly there. Danielle Collins or as she is affectionately known as DanYELL saw off Maria Sakkari yesterday and coming from qualifying and having her first run of matches in some time has proven that she still possesses the quality that took her to an Australian Open final.
The same can be said for Fernandez who has failed to live up to the Emma Raducanu US Open final loss albeit without as much endorsements and pressure. Taking down Beatriz Haddad Maia expertly yesterday, she comes off the back too of a good run in Washington and is hitting form just at the right time.
As is Aryna Sabalenka with the World Number Two easing through Petra Martic and now gets a tougher test in Liudmila Samsonova. Qinwen Zheng and Katerina Siniakova have fell to the Italian based Russian who comes off a semi-final run in Washington. This could prove to be a real banana skin for the World Number Two who is not only chasing the title but the World Number One spot.
While for Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina in particular, they shift onto the second show court on Court Rogers. The former took down Yulia Putintseva and now faces Jasmine Paolini.
Paolini benefitted from Madison Keys withdrawing due to injury and moved straight through so gets the chance of a Quarter-Final. While Rybakina nearly wasn't at this point at all. She came through a real scare against the resurgent and returning Jennifer Brady and was two points from defeat.
A match that had to be played over two days, they now come thick and fast and it is Sloane Stephens next up for the third seed in Canada who will also look to reclaim the World Number Three from Jessica Pegula this week. At times, Rybakina did a superb job in adapting and overcoming and at others looked vulnerable against Brady so the jury will still be out on her current form.
Other ties see Marie Bouzkova face Daria Kasatkina, while Petra Kvitova will take on Belinda Bencic in the final match of the session. Another big day awaits in Montreal with the latter stages to be set up.
