Caroline Garcia almost found herself disqualified from her match against Marie Bouzkova at the National Bank Canadian Open (Omnium Banque Nationale) in Montreal.
World No. 6 Garcia was defeated in her first match at the WTA 1000 event, losing to world No. 33 Bouzkova, who won in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. This means the Czech extends her lead in their head-to-head to 4-0.
After knocking out the fifth seed, Bouzkova will go on to face the winner of the match between Anna Blinkova and tenth seed Daria Kasatkina.

Garcia rage-hits ball

The match was undoubtedly a frustrating one for Garcia. The Frenchwoman has been struggling as of late, going out in the first round of last week's DC Open and failing to win consecutive matches on the clay court earlier this season.
A major upset occurred in her most recent match when Bouzkova achieved three break points at 4-4. After the 25-year-old won the point, thus swinging the set in her favour, Garcia expressed her frustration.
The 29-year-old rage-hit a ball into the net following the break, nearly hitting a ball-kid in the process.

Garcia receives warning

As a result of this, Garcia was issued with a warning and was lucky to face no further punishment, as an action such as this could have led to being defaulted.
Normally, a default occurs if the player has received four code violations during a match, but can happen with less if the umpire deems the code violation to be severe enough.
Tennis fans have reacted to the situation on social media, with some expressing their shock and sadness at the situation.
"Omg I didn’t realise how close she was to hitting the ball kid," wrote one on X, formerly known as Twitter. Meanwhile, another added, "omg they almost default her," followed by a crying emoji.
